"Don't be fooled into thinking Grace is a Candy Dulfer wannabe - Candy would want to be Grace Darling, if she had what it takes."

FAQs

Share with us your favorite Jazz Fest memory.
"I have so many wonderful memories of Jazz Fest over the years... but my favorite
times have always been on stage. I would have to say (other than the first time my band &
I played at the Fest) one of my most thrilling experiences was performing with Allen a few
years ago. Allen featured me on one of his sets, and he just made me feel so special the
way he acknowledged me to the audience... not to mention there were approximately 30,000
people there that day and they just went absolutely wild!"
What are your five favorite records in your personal collection?
I truly don't have 5 favorites. I listen to so much variety and what I like to listen
to depends greatly on my mood. I will say, though, that a particular recording of Billie
Holiday called "Lady in Satin" just melts me every time. I like to listen to it late at
night.
What is the title of your favorite song that you wrote?
I can see all these questions are about favorites... and I hate to disappoint...
but I don't have one. However, if you narrow the field down to what I have recorded thus
far it would have to be "Sally on A Streetcar."
What is your favorite song written by someone else?
Same answer... I honestly have no favorites. There are just way too many amazing songs
out there. And I have never been partial to just one. I love every thing from Mozart to
Stevie Wonder... and there is always something new and beautiful happening all the time.
Do you have any advice to musicians and song writers?
Yes. Write and play from the heart. It doesn't matter how many notes you know or how
many cool chord substitutions... what matters is, can you play? Can you write a song that
touches a person? All that knowledge and technique is useful... but the greatest players
and writers use their hearts first and everything else is secondary. Look at Billie
Holiday... her voice was rough and her range fairly limited... but look at how she bared
her soul when she sang... she was amazing.
Where is the best place to eat in New Orleans?
Well that depends on what ya wanna eat! This is the city of music and food... it's hard
to go wrong! Come to Jazz Fest and you can sample some of the best of both!
Where is the best place to catch live music in New Orleans?
There are several great spots in this city on any given night... Tipitina's, House of
Blues, Snug Harbor (for jazz).... just to name a few.
When is the best time to visit New Orleans?
What day is your birthday?
Press

Orlando Sentinel, Friday, January 9, 1998
"Singer-saxophonist Grace Darling is a pleasing new artist. However, it's the Allen Toussaint touch that really sets Imaginary Lover apart. Toussaint, a New Orleans legend who has worked with everyone from Patti LaBelle to Dr. John, is one of the founders of NYNO Records as well as Darling's producer. He also plays keyboards on several tracks here…making an album that could appeal to both the adult-contemporary audience and music fans who want more stylistic and musical complexity than that format usually offers."
