"Watch out for James Andrews."

--All About Jazz

"James Andrews is good, too. We call him Lil' 12. He knows all the tunes, and he gets some real good vocal sounds out of his horn."

--Wynton Marsalis

James Andrews: Bio

James Andrews, lead singer and trumpeter of The New Birth Brass Band, is one of the most talented and charismatic figures on today's jazz scene. James (locally known as "Satchmo Of The Ghetto") is a member of a prominent New Orleans music family which also includes Prince LaLa and Jesse Hill. His forthcoming solo album, Satchmo of the Ghetto, which also features Dr. John and Allen Toussaint, is a mix of traditional New Orleans trumpet workouts, acid jazz-styled, instrumental funk and gruff, soulful Louis Armstrong influenced vocals.

CMJ New Music Report, Monday, June 15, 1998
"Satchmo of the Ghetto is a pleasing amalgam of good ol' Crescent City jazz, down home funk, even a trace or two of sanctified gospel ("Old Rugged Cross") and Latin ("Going For The Money") that reminds you how close New Orleans is to the Caribbean. For a youngster like Andrews, it's rather suprising that he's gone and made what may well be a milestone album in the history of New Orleans."
